How To Make Pumpkin Spice Tallow Lip Balm
Just in time for “Pumpkin Spice” Season, I have been making an infused tallow lip balm for those who can’t get enough of the orange mascots of Fall. These DIY natural lip balms are going to be your go-to this season, and I may even convert some die-hard Chapstick fans.
This homemade tallow lip balm recipe is the BEST alternative to popular commercial lip moisturizers. It’s buttery smooth, locks in moisture, and doesn’t leave your lips sticky. They are super easy to make and only take a few ingredients. Homemade tallow lip balms make awesome gifts and party favors too. Or if you want them for yourself, you only have to make them once a year. These may be the most cost-effective lip balm out there!
Benefits of Tallow for Your Lips
If you are new to beef tallow skincare products, take a look at our post on How to Render Your Own Tallow or How to Make Tallow Balm. Tallow is rendered beef fat. Yes, I know it sounds strange, but if you can eat it why not use it on your lips?
Most of the benefits I’ve seen come from personal experience (I am not a doctor and none of this information should be considered medical advice). Tallow is super moisturizing; it keeps the moisture in our skin and helps with our skin barrier. It can soothe irritations and redness, especially on chapped lips. The fatty acids and vitamins naturally provide the nourishment our skin and lips need to push back dryness and seal in the good stuff. All without petroleum or alcohol, which makes it perfect for sensitive skin!
Where Do I Get Tallow?
Where do you get tallow, especially if you live in the suburbs like me? When we get our yearly quarter of beef we ask the processor to include the fat. Some cattle farms have started selling their tallow (check out local farms around you), some cosmetic/soap suppliers have started stocking it, and there are also companies like FATWORKS or EPIC (but those tend to be more trim fat meant for cooking).
Lip Balm Supplies:
- Lip Balm Tubes
- Lip Balm Tube Tray (not 100% necessary but makes life a lot easier)
- Double Boiler
- Silicone Spatula
- Glass Pourable Measuring Cup
- Small Sieve
- Cheesecloth

Lip Balm Ingredients:
- 5oz Rendered Tallow
- 1 Heaping Tbsp Beeswax Pellets
- 1 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice
- 1/2 tsp Vanilla Bean Powder
Instructions:
- To a double boiler, fill the bottom half with water
- Add tallow, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla bean powder to top bowl
- Heat over medium on stovetop for 2-3 hours to infuse
- Stir mixture occasionally to mix in the spices
- After 2-3 hours add beeswax to melt for 15-30 minutes
- While the mixture is infusing, click empty tubes into tray from the bottom
- Once everything is sufficiently melted remove the mixture from the heat and dry off the bottom and sides of the bowl with the tallow very well
- Pour mixture through cheesecloth into measuring cup
- Fill tubes until overfull (this is where the tray comes in handy)
- Let tubes cool completely while still in tray
- Once cooled, use a spatula or knife to scrape the extra balm off the tops and smooth them out
- Cap balms, storing at room temperature and out of direct sunlight
Notes:
- Watch water level in the double boiler carefully and add more as needed – you may need to refill 2-3 times throughout heating
- Be sure when you refill the water to not splash ANY water in the tallow (water leads to mold)
- You want to overfill the tubes with hot balm because when the balm hardens it shrinks a bit
- Remelt any extra scraps to make another tube
- This recipe makes approx. 25 tubes – you can half the recipe for a smaller batch

Tallow Lip Balm FAQs
Not if you have infused spices, herbs, or added essential oils. Even if you left the tallow plain it should have a slight buttery smell plus a slight honey smell from the beeswax.
We have not found it to be greasy, but having more of a buttery and silky texture that melts right into your lips!
Just like any other lip balm, I wouldn’t leave it in a car on a hot day, but for the most part, it should be fine at room temperature or in a bag.
Of course! Our favorites are infusions of vanilla or coffee. You can also add in a couple of drops of essential oils (make sure you do not use photo-reactive oils and use the correct dilution rate).
