Easy Breakfast: French Toast Made with Homemade Whole Wheat Bread
French Toast was the classic “Dad’s on Duty” breakfast we would get as kids when Mom would be gone. No special mixes are needed, and it only takes a few minutes to make. I loved it then, and I still love it today. It is so simple and also easy to make a little fancier. We usually keep it pretty basic, but every now and again we will make it more fun.

This recipe is very forgiving, you can’t really mess it up. Threw in an extra egg? Great, more protein. Added a little too much milk, no worries it’ll be fine.

French Toast Toppings
My favorite way to eat French toast when I am feeling fancy is peanut butter, blueberries, bacon crumbles, and maple syrup! I have also been known to eat a cold slice on the go. Here are some of the other toppings we enjoy:
- Nutella
- Jam
- Peanut Butter
- Banana
- Bacon
- Granola for a crunch
- Diced peaches
- Blueberries
- Powdered Sugar
- Apple Butter
- Pumpkin Butter
- Butter
- Maple Syrup
- Honey
Supplies:
- Pie Pan
- Fork
- Spatula
- Griddle or cooking pan
Ingredients:
- 6-8 pieces of Sourdough Sandwich bread sliced
- 1/4-1/2 Cup Milk
- 5 Eggs
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
- Butter for coating pan
- Maple Syrup for serving
Instructions:
- Gather ingredients and preheat griddle or pan to medium heat
- Crack eggs into pie pan and slice bread if needed
- Add milk to eggs, and whisk until pretty uniform
- Add cinnamon and whisk, it doesn’t fully incorporate
- Place 2 slices bread in mixture for 30 seconds, flip and soak other side 30 seconds
- Place soaked bread onto hot griddle and cook each side for 2-3 minutes
Notes:
- 6-8 slices of bread for me is about half to two-thirds of a loaf of my Sourdough Sandwich Bread, but you may need a bit more or less
- Adjusting recipe is simple, add another egg and a splash more milk if you have an extra slice or two of bread to use up
- You can switch up or add to the cinnamon- try a pumpkin spice mix, or cocoa powder!
- Any type of milk can be used (coconut, almond, whole, skim)
- Extra French toast makes THE BEST French Toast Bread Pudding (recipe coming soon).

Can I freeze French toast?
Yes! I love to make the whole loaf (double recipe) and freeze what we don’t eat. It makes it super easy for my kids to make themselves breakfast – they can pull a piece of French toast from the freezer and easily reheat it in the microwave or toast it. Make sure to let the cooked French toast cool completely before putting it into a gallon bag to freeze.
